Teeth Whitening Complete Guide - In-Chair and At-Home at Smile Solutions

A brighter smile is one of the most common goals patients bring to Smile Solutions. Professional teeth whitening, whether performed in the chair or at home under dental supervision, is one of dentistry's safest, most proven and most satisfying cosmetic treatments. When done correctly, results can be dramatic and long-lasting.

This guide covers both in-chair Zoom whitening and at-home Day White whitening, including what to expect during treatment, how to maximise your results, and how to manage sensitivity.

Part One: In-Chair Zoom Whitening

What Is Zoom Whitening?

Zoom is the world's leading professional in-chair whitening system. It uses a high-concentration hydrogen peroxide gel, activated by a Zoom LED light, to accelerate the whitening process and deliver significant shade improvement in a single appointment, typically 60-90 minutes in the chair.

Zoom is used at Smile Solutions as part of our veneer packages and as a standalone whitening treatment. It is performed by our dental hygienists and dentists.

Before Your Zoom Appointment

To achieve the best possible result:

  • Attend a professional cleaning appointment before Zoom whitening if possible. Stain and calculus on the teeth will block the whitening gel from reaching the enamel surface, and removing these first maximises the whitening effect.
  • Avoid red wine, coffee, tea, curry, berries and other intensely coloured foods and drinks for 24-48 hours before your appointment.
  • If you have known sensitivity, speak to your dentist about pre-treatment fluoride application or sensitivity toothpaste use in the weeks leading up to whitening.

During the Appointment

  • Your lips and gums are carefully protected with a barrier before the gel is applied
  • Zoom hydrogen peroxide gel is applied to the tooth surfaces
  • The Zoom LED light is positioned to activate the gel
  • Treatment is typically delivered in three 15-minute cycles
  • Vitamin E is applied to the gum tissues during and after treatment to help soothe any gum sensitivity from gel contact

After Zoom In-Chair Whitening

The 24-Hour White Diet

The 24 hours immediately following Zoom whitening are the most critical for protecting your result. The whitening process temporarily opens the pores in tooth enamel, making teeth more susceptible to staining. During this period, strictly avoid all deeply coloured foods and drinks.

Avoid for the first 24 hours (and ideally 48 hours):

  • Tea and coffee (herbal teas are fine)
  • Red wine, dark beer, grape juice
  • Tomato-based sauces and curry
  • Berries, cherries, blueberries
  • Balsamic vinegar and soy sauce
  • Dark soft drinks (cola, etc.)
  • Beetroot
  • Dark chocolate
  • Tobacco

Safe to eat and drink:

  • Water (still or sparkling)
  • White wine (in moderation)
  • Clear juices (apple, pear)
  • Milk and yoghurt
  • White bread, rice, pasta without coloured sauces
  • Chicken, fish, white meat
  • Cheese
  • Bananas, apples, pears

Managing Sensitivity

Some tooth sensitivity following Zoom whitening is normal and expected. It is caused by the hydrogen peroxide penetrating the enamel and temporarily affecting the pulp (nerve) of the tooth. Sensitivity typically:

  • Begins during or shortly after the whitening appointment
  • Is described as sharp, shooting sensations, particularly to cold air or water
  • Peaks within the first 24 hours
  • Resolves completely within 24-48 hours for most patients, sometimes longer

To manage sensitivity:

  • Use a sensitivity toothpaste (containing potassium nitrate or stannous fluoride) immediately after whitening and for a few days after
  • Apply fluoride gel as directed by your dentist
  • Avoid very cold drinks and foods during the sensitivity period
  • Take ibuprofen or paracetamol if sensitivity is uncomfortable
  • Avoid hot food and drinks immediately after whitening

If sensitivity is severe or lasts beyond 48 hours, contact Smile Solutions.

Vitamin E for Gum Comfort

Vitamin E oil or gel may be applied to the gum line after Zoom treatment to soothe any tissue irritation from gel contact. This is part of our standard post-treatment care. You can continue applying vitamin E oil to the gums at home for a day or two if needed.

Colour Settling

The final colour of your whitened teeth is not fully apparent immediately after treatment. Teeth may appear slightly whiter (and in some cases slightly chalky) immediately post-treatment and will settle to their true final shade over one to two weeks.

Do not judge your final result immediately. Shade assessment should be done one to two weeks after treatment once the colour has stabilised and any mild dehydration of the teeth has resolved.

Whitening Longevity and Refresh Timeline

The longevity of Zoom whitening results depends on your diet, lifestyle and natural tooth characteristics. As a general guide:

  • Whitening results typically last six to twelve months with good maintenance
  • Coffee, red wine and smoking are the biggest factors that accelerate re-staining
  • A professional clean at your six-monthly hygiene appointment helps remove surface stain and maintain brightness
  • A brief at-home top-up with professional whitening gel can refresh your result between full Zoom treatments
  • Many patients choose to repeat in-chair whitening annually or before significant events

Part Two: At-Home Day White Whitening

What Is Day White?

Day White is a professional at-home whitening system using custom-fitted whitening trays and professional-strength hydrogen peroxide gel dispensed by your dentist. It is not available over the counter; the trays are made from impressions of your own teeth and the gel concentration is significantly higher than over-the-counter whitening products.

Day White is available as:

  • A standalone at-home whitening kit
  • A maintenance and touch-up system following in-chair Zoom whitening
  • A more gradual option for patients with significant sensitivity concerns

Getting Started

Custom whitening trays are made from dental impressions (or a digital scan) of your teeth. The trays fit precisely over your teeth, holding the gel in close contact with the enamel while minimising gel contact with the gums.

Your dentist will provide you with syringes of whitening gel and full instructions for use.

Using Your Day White Trays

Loading the trays:

  • Place a small dot of gel (approximately the size of a small pea) into each tooth space in the tray
  • Less gel is more. Overfilling trays leads to excess gel spreading onto the gums, causing irritation
  • Seat the trays over your teeth and gently press them in place
  • Wipe away any excess gel that squeezes onto the gums immediately

Wear time:

  • Day White is typically worn for 30-60 minutes once or twice daily
  • Follow the specific instructions provided with your gel, as wear time varies by gel concentration
  • Some patients use their trays while relaxing, watching television or during household tasks

Course duration:

  • A standard whitening course takes 2-4 weeks for optimal results
  • Your dentist will advise on the appropriate duration based on your starting shade and goals

Day White Aftercare and Tips

Storage

  • Store whitening gel syringes in a cool, dark place or in the refrigerator
  • Do not store in direct sunlight or in a hot car; heat degrades hydrogen peroxide
  • Use gel before the expiry date for best efficacy
  • Store completed trays in their case when not in use

Dos and Don'ts

Do:

  • Brush and rinse teeth before inserting trays for maximum gel contact with enamel
  • Rinse trays thoroughly with cool water after use and allow to dry before storing
  • Maintain your regular oral hygiene routine
  • Continue using a sensitivity toothpaste during and after whitening

Do not:

  • Eat, drink (other than water) or smoke while wearing trays
  • Use toothpaste inside the trays (it neutralises the whitening gel)
  • Leave the trays in for longer than directed; longer is not always better and can increase sensitivity
  • Use trays if they feel ill-fitting or cause excessive gum discomfort

Amalgam Considerations

If you have amalgam (silver) fillings, be aware that whitening gel can sometimes cause temporary surface oxidation on amalgam restorations adjacent to the treated area. This can appear as darkening at the margins of the filling. This is a surface effect only and does not damage the restoration; however, if you notice this, discuss it with your dentist at your next visit.

Gum Sensitivity

Some gum sensitivity or whitening of the gum tissue at the tray margin is normal and resolves quickly when whitening is paused. If gum irritation is persistent:

  • Reduce the amount of gel used in the trays to minimise overflow
  • Reduce the wear time per session
  • Allow one to two days' break before resuming
  • Contact Smile Solutions if irritation is significant

Touch-Up Schedule

Day White trays and gel are ideal for maintaining your whitening result long-term. Typical touch-up recommendations:

  • Every six to twelve months for patients who drink coffee, tea or wine regularly
  • Every twelve to eighteen months for patients with good dietary habits
  • Before significant events (weddings, presentations, reunions)

Your whitening trays last for many years if well maintained, so the ongoing cost of touch-ups is just the replacement gel.

Professional Whitening vs Over-the-Counter Products

Many patients ask about the whitening strips, pens and kits available from supermarkets and online. While these products are legal and safe at the concentrations sold over the counter in Australia, they contain significantly lower concentrations of whitening agent than professional products and typically produce more modest results.

Professional Zoom and Day White systems delivered by a dentist offer:

  • Significantly higher active ingredient concentrations (achievable only with a dental prescription in Australia)
  • Custom-fitted trays that hold gel in precise contact with the teeth
  • Professional assessment to ensure whitening is appropriate for your teeth and any restorations
  • Management of sensitivity with fluoride and desensitising agents
  • Results that can be several shades brighter than achievable with OTC products

Is Whitening Suitable for You?

Whitening is not suitable for everyone. Your dentist will assess suitability before recommending treatment:

Whitening works on natural tooth enamel. Crowns, veneers, bridges, composite fillings and other dental restorations do not whiten with peroxide gels. This is important to understand if you have prominent restorations in visible teeth; whitening your natural teeth without changing the restorations may create a mismatch in shade.

Active decay and gum disease should be treated first. Whitening over decayed or periodontal-affected teeth can cause significant sensitivity and should be deferred until the underlying conditions are managed.

Not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding as a precautionary measure.
