The Invisalign treatment process, step by step: from consultation to retainer | Smile Solutions Melbourne

Smile Solutions has refined its Invisalign process across 8,900+ completed cases, which means the experience tends to be predictable in the best possible way — fewer surprises, clearer expectations, better results. Here's exactly what to expect, from your first contact through to your final retainer fitting, at Australia's Blue Diamond Invisalign provider.

Step 1: Free initial consultation

Your first appointment costs nothing and carries no obligation.

You'll sit down with an experienced treatment coordinator who takes the time to understand your smile goals. During this appointment, your coordinator will:

  • Listen to what you want from your smile and what matters most to you
  • Assess your suitability for Invisalign based on a preliminary examination
  • Explain the real differences between Invisalign Express, Lite, Moderate, and Comprehensive, so you know which option actually fits your situation
  • Provide a clear, written quote for the recommended package
  • Answer your questions about timeline, payment options, and what treatment looks like day-to-day

If you have existing X-rays from your general dentist, bring them along. They may reduce the need for additional imaging and help your specialist build a more complete clinical picture from the start.

Step 2: Specialist orthodontic assessment and iTero scanning

Your next appointment is with one of our board-registered specialist orthodontists: Dr David Austin, Dr Joshua Ch'ng, Dr Katie Xu, or Dr Andrea Phatouros. Each holds postgraduate university qualifications specifically in tooth and jaw correction — the kind of clinical depth that shapes your outcome in ways a general dentist simply can't replicate.

This appointment covers:

  • iTero digital scanning — a handheld scanner captures a precise 3D model of your teeth and bite in minutes. No physical impressions, no uncomfortable moulds. Scanning takes place at our Level 1 practice, 220 Collins Street, Manchester Unity Building.
  • Clinical examination — your specialist assesses your bite, jaw joint, gum health, and any existing dental work to confirm Invisalign is appropriate for your full clinical picture
  • X-ray review — existing X-rays are reviewed, or new digital X-rays are taken as needed to support accurate treatment planning
  • Treatment planning discussion — your specialist walks you through the proposed approach, the expected outcome, and any factors that may shape your plan, such as existing crowns or bite discrepancies that may need attachments

Step 3: ClinCheck digital treatment simulation

Using your iTero scan data, Invisalign's ClinCheck software generates a detailed digital simulation of your entire treatment, showing how each tooth is planned to move from its current position to its final position.

What sets Smile Solutions apart here is that your specialist orthodontist personally reviews and refines this simulation before you see it. ClinCheck is never accepted as-is; our specialists make considered clinical adjustments to the algorithm's output, optimising tooth movement sequencing based on their training and your individual anatomy.

What you see: A clear, side-by-side comparison of your current smile and your projected final result, before a single aligner is produced.

For most patients, this is one of the more memorable moments of the whole process. Seeing a realistic preview of your completed smile, before committing to treatment, makes the journey feel concrete and worth starting.

Step 4: Custom aligner fabrication

Once your ClinCheck simulation is finalised and approved by your specialist, the files go to Invisalign's manufacturing facility. Your custom aligners are made from SmartTrack material, a proprietary thermoplastic engineered for consistent force delivery and a close, precise fit.

Production time: Typically 3–4 weeks from ClinCheck approval to aligner delivery at our Melbourne practice.

For broader context on Smile Solutions' in-house technology: CEREC and Primescan are used across the practice, and our in-house laboratory, led by master ceramist Greg Karabasis, handles ceramic restorations that complement orthodontic outcomes. Aligner fabrication itself takes place at Invisalign's facility.

Step 5: Aligner fitting — treatment commencement

Your fitting appointment is where treatment actually begins. At this visit:

  • Your first set of aligners is inserted and fit-checked by your specialist
  • Attachments are bonded if required — small, tooth-coloured composite buttons that help your aligners produce specific tooth movements
  • You receive clear instructions on your wear schedule, how to care for your aligners, and how to progress through your sets
  • You take home your first several sets of aligners, so you're prepared from day one

The 22-hour rule: Aligners need to be worn for 22 hours per day for treatment to progress on schedule. You'll remove them only for eating, drinking (anything other than water), brushing, and flossing. Consistent wear is the single most important thing you can do to keep treatment on track.

Aligner changes: Depending on your case, you'll move to a fresh set every 1–2 weeks, as directed by your specialist.

Step 6: Progress monitoring via Dental Monitoring

Smile Solutions uses Dental Monitoring technology to track your progress between in-clinic visits. Using a smartphone app and a cheek retractor, you take periodic scan photos at home, which your specialist orthodontist then reviews.

This makes a practical difference:

  • Any tooth that isn't tracking correctly gets picked up earlier, so it can be addressed before it compounds
  • Fewer in-clinic appointments are needed without any reduction in oversight quality
  • Refinement aligners can be identified and ordered sooner, keeping treatment moving

If you have a busy schedule, you'll appreciate this. Your specialist is monitoring your progress with genuine clinical attention, without requiring a trip to Collins Street every few weeks.

Step 7: Progress appointments

You'll visit Smile Solutions at intervals your specialist determines, typically every 6–10 weeks. At each visit:

  • Your progress is assessed against your ClinCheck simulation
  • Attachments are checked and re-bonded where needed
  • Any aligner fit issues are identified and resolved
  • Your next aligner set schedule is confirmed

If your teeth aren't tracking exactly to plan, your specialist can address it before any minor variation becomes a bigger issue. This is what attentive, evidence-based orthodontic care actually looks like in practice.

Step 8: Refinement aligners (if required)

A final set of refinement aligners is quite common, particularly for comprehensive cases. They address minor tooth movements that didn't fully express during the main aligner series. This is a normal part of treatment — it means your specialist is paying close attention to detail, not that something went wrong.

At Smile Solutions, refinement aligners are included in your treatment package. Your specialist will let you know at your final assessment appointment whether they're needed and what to expect.

Step 9: Treatment completion — Vivera retainers

When active treatment is complete, upper and lower Vivera retainers are fitted. Vivera is Invisalign's retention system, fabricated from the same iTero scan data used to create your aligners, so the fit is precise and comfortable.

Why retainers matter: Teeth tend to drift back toward their original positions over time. Without retention, orthodontic results can gradually undo themselves. That's why Vivera retainers are included in your Smile Solutions Invisalign package at no additional cost.

Retention protocol: You'll wear retainers full-time initially, then transition to night-time wear as your specialist directs. Most orthodontists recommend indefinite night-time wear to maintain your results long-term — a small habit that protects a significant investment.

Complimentary whitening

For eligible Invisalign packages at Smile Solutions, complimentary teeth whitening is included upon treatment completion. The timing is deliberate — whitening is coordinated to coincide with your newly straightened smile, so the aesthetic result is as complete as possible.
